I had never seen the Richards quote before. Wow! I have been thinking about this the past few days and was going to blog about it, but you stole it :P

And then I was going to tell you that "All or nothing" is an actual logical fallacy called false dilemma/dichotomy, but October bet me to that.

I was thinking about the conference talk a few times ago where the speaker told a story that pretty much ended with "It [the Church] is true isn't it? Then what else matters?" And how that is and example of this logical fallacy. Especially if you are one who differentiates between the Church and the Gospel.Tommyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00748609445336219099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-47078415549455829542009-01-06T22:08:00.000-08:002009-01-06T22:08:00.000-08:00Thanks Austin, glad you found it thought-provoking...Thanks Austin, glad you found it thought-provoking. If you want to add more fuel to the fire (and possibly gather some ideas with which to tweak your "traditional LDS" family!), check out this excellent blog post for a similar perspective but with a twist:

http://mormonmd.wordpress.com/2009/01/04/from-the-archives-the-whole-truth-and-nothing-but/Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02992194211469009236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-57199585470299397082009-01-06T12:59:00.000-08:002009-01-06T12:59:00.000-08:00Thank you for the follow-up! I appreciate your response to my question.

Like Bravone, I think I'll need to ponder it for awhile.
But if you are correct it is extremely disappointing to know that the church purposely misleads it's members in this way. I was a member of the church for 20 years and this "all-or-nothing" theory was discussed many times in many different settings, and I can tell you that my parents, siblings, and family believe this way as well.

Thanks Alan!Austinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14832405990237288900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-17436775723172997812009-01-06T06:51:00.000-08:002009-01-06T06:51:00.000-08:00I like to look at the final judgment as a one-on-o...I like to look at the final judgment as a one-on-one interview where I am compared against no one else but myself with the Lord. There is no black-and-white in that setting. There is a lot of room for situations and circumstances and mercy considering my bag of talents that I was given and what I did with them... nothing else.

Somehow thinking this way, I don't feel the need to get caught up in the all or nothingness of things.Beckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06159223254071653666noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-23439519078655512432009-01-05T23:23:00.000-08:002009-01-05T23:23:00.000-08:00Amen Grant!Amen Grant!Ezrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18249055675517672157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-67297346881521194282009-01-05T21:29:00.000-08:002009-01-05T21:29:00.000-08:00Amen Grant.Amen Grant.Bravonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02762204502534599107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-61726888815804762772009-01-05T21:14:00.000-08:002009-01-05T21:14:00.000-08:00Thank you for this. The "all or nothing" complex of many Mormons is what shuts out reality and under the "all or nothing" no one can actually exist.

For me the challenge is differentiating Mormon doctrine and Mormon culture. As you've pointed out Mormon doctrine would leave a lot to the interpretation of individuals. However, Mormon culture isn't as merciful. And that is the struggle for me. The doctrine says all are welcome, but the culture says "not so fast".Grant Hawshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11285466218376293776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-18412608733305602292009-01-05T20:08:00.000-08:002009-01-05T20:08:00.000-08:00I wish it were all-or-nothing; it would make thing...I wish it were all-or-nothing; it would make things so less complicated.chednerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14963974112297032614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5100747061833336603.post-6360057101979341592009-01-05T17:29:00.000-08:002009-01-05T17:29:00.000-08:00VERY well written Alan!
