Vox Prudens
An admirable voice of reason amidst the cacophonous caterwauling of deseretnews.com comments about the gay couple's kiss at the edge of church property:
"The bigger problem is not that the church was within its rights, but how and when they choose to enforce those rights. There are many times in life that being in the right but at the wrong time creates a public relations nightmare. And that is what the church has here. Rather than let two disrespectful individuals move on, they put the spot light on them, giving the world a chance to criticise the church for the uneven application of its own rules."

The Mormon church seems to be very bad at public relations. Of course not them but many conservative religious types. I guess public relations don't matter so much when you're busy telling people how wrong they are...
I wonder if the Church would have been so keen on purchasing that section of Main Street had it known the legal and publicity nightmares it continues to have with the Plaza. I wrote a paper a few years ago following the legal battles over the public easement that the City retained on the Plaza.
This is SOOOO on target! Legally, the church can do whatever it wants with that bit of property...but it was an amazingly stupid PR move, not to mention a poor choice as a group claiming to be a Christian organization.
The Church is allowing itself to be defined by gay rights issues...and I am not sure it will be the missionary tool they hoped it would be.
@Grant.--no, it's not a missionary tool in the slightest. The Mormon Church used to be defined by it's focus on good works and family. Now most people just think of it as a mechanism for hate.
